Medicare Basics

What Medicare Covers

Medicare is federal health insurance primarily for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger people who qualify because of a disability or other eligible condition. Medicare is divided into different parts, each covering different types of health care.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. They provide your Part A and Part B benefits and may include additional benefits, such as prescription drug, dental, hearing, or vision coverage.

Medicare Part A

Hospital Insurance

Medicare Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and certain home health services. Most people don't pay a monthly premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for the required amount of time.

Medical Insurance

Medicare Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and certain medical equipment and services. Part B generally has a monthly premium, which can vary based on income.

Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare in Washington

  • What is Medicare and how does it work?

Medicare is federal health insurance primarily for people age 65 and older and certain younger people who qualify. Original Medicare includes Part A for hospital coverage and Part B for medical coverage. You may also have the option to add Part D prescription drug coverage and Medicare Supplement insurance or receive your Medicare benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan.

  • What are the four parts of Medicare?

The four parts of Medicare are Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Part A primarily covers hospital care, Part B covers medical and outpatient services, Part C refers to Medicare Advantage plans offered by private insurers, and Part D provides prescription drug coverage.

  • What's the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage is an alternative way to receive your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance company. Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, works alongside Original Medicare to help cover certain out-of-pocket costs. The right approach depends on factors such as your health care needs, preferred doctors, prescriptions, travel habits, and budget.

  • Do I have to pay for a Medicare insurance agent in Washington?

There is no direct cost to you for working with our Medicare insurance agents. We can help you understand Medicare and compare the plans we represent without charging you an agent consultation fee.

  • I'm turning 65. What do I need to do about Medicare?

If you're turning 65, your first steps depend partly on whether you're already receiving Social Security benefits and whether you or your spouse are still working and covered by an employer health plan. Understanding your enrollment timeline can help you determine when you need to enroll and which Medicare options to consider.

  • Can I keep working after 65 and delay Medicare?

In some situations, yes. Whether you can delay Medicare without a late-enrollment penalty depends on the type of employer coverage you have and other factors. It's important to review your specific situation before deciding to delay enrollment.

  • Can a Medicare agent help me compare my doctors and prescriptions?

Yes. When helping you evaluate Medicare plans, our team can review factors such as your preferred doctors, prescription medications, pharmacies, and coverage priorities to help you understand which available options may fit your needs.
